Exploring the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park between nature and heritage

Situated between the departments of Isère and Savoie, the Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse covers an area of 76,700 hectares, uniting 57 communes around a project to preserve and enhance its natural and cultural heritage. Since its creation in May 1995, it has embodied the balance between sustainable development, biodiversity and respect for the environment.

History and creation

The Park’s genesis dates back to 1995, when it was granted Regional Nature Park status, symbolizing the commitment of local communities to the preservation of their territory. This initiative was renewed in April 2008, consolidating the importance attached to the preservation of the massif’s riches.

Geography and biodiversity

The Parc de Chartreuse is characterized by a singular topography, between mountains and valleys, where dense forests, verdant meadows and crystal-clear waterways meet. The site boasts remarkable biodiversity, home to a variety of plant and animal species, some of which are unique to the region.

Cultural heritage

Beyond its natural splendor, the Parc de Chartreuse boasts a rich cultural heritage, including the famous Grande Chartreuse monasteries. These emblematic sites bear witness to centuries-old monastic history and add a spiritual dimension to your exploration of the park.

Responsible tourism

The Park encourages environmentally-friendly tourism. Visitors can engage in activities such as hiking, cycling and wildlife observation without disturbing the ecosystem. Marked trails allow safe immersion in unspoilt nature.

The Hauts de Chartreuse Nature Reserve

The Hauts de Chartreuse Nature Reserve, created in 1997, complements the Park by specifically protecting certain areas. This reserve, accessible only on foot, preserves grandiose landscapes and exceptional biodiversity.

Commitments and actions

The Parc de Chartreuse is not content with its status, but is actively involved in conservation initiatives. Species conservation projects, rational management of natural areas and public awareness campaigns all contribute to the Park’s overall mission.

The Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, between its mountains and its heritage, offers an immersive experience where nature and history blend harmoniously.
